Description of Service
Vascular and Interventional Radiology is a specialized area in diagnostic imaging that uses the guidance of medical imaging (ultrasound, fluoroscopy) to perform minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This typically means less pain, risk and recovery time for patients.

Preparation for Visit
When you come to Diagnostic Imaging, please bring the following:
- Your requisition if you have it
- Your health card. If you have the old “Red and White” health card without your picture on it, please bring Government-issued photo identification.
- Any paperwork you have received about this test.
- Any additional information such as outside imaging
- A list of all current medications
Please make sure you follow any preparations or instructions you have been given.
What to Expect from Your Procedure:
Before Your Procedure:
Your doctor will be notified of required bloodwork. Please contact your doctor to get a requisition for bloodwork.
Your doctor will be provided with suggested medication holds. Contact your doctor for direction on discontinuing medications, including blood thinners.
Bring prior x-rays or scans with you to your exam, if instructed.
Please notify the staff if you are nursing or if there is a chance you may be pregnant.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to verify your registration.
During the Procedure:
A local anesthetic is used to numb area where the needle will be inserted. Sedative medication may also be used.
The doctor will position you for most appropriate access to the area for biopsy or treatment.
The skin will be swabbed with a cleaning solution and may be draped with surgical towels
A needle will be inserted at the site
For biopsies, there may be multiple passes for positioning, or to obtain multiple samples.
You may feel a pinch, pressure, or nothing at all.
Time Required:
Depending on the procedure, you may be on the procedure table for 30min or multiple hours. Your nurse will discuss the length of time with you prior to your procedure. You may also call the booking office to inquire about your specific procedures timing.
After the Procedure:
Depending on the procedure you are having done, you will most likely be monitored post procedure for 15min - 4 hours.
Patients receiving GA (general anesthetic) will be admitted and monitored for 24-48 hours
Follow Up
Pathology reports for biopsy are returned to your doctor within 24 to 72 hours.
Once the test results have been completed and confirmed, your doctor will tell you if any further follow up is required.
Please note that due to the high number of patient visits to our hospital every day, you may experience clinic wait times and a delay in finding parking. We encourage you to arrive early and allow for extra time on the day of your appointment. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, the appointment will be rescheduled to another day. All Diagnostic Imaging tests require an appointment except for general x-ray, such as a chest x-ray.
