Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Credit Valley Hospital provides specialized care for newborns who need extra medical support.

NICU features and services include: ​
  • Regional Advanced Level II NICU
  • Capacity for 35 bassinets
  • More than 600 admissions each year, with most babies admitted from the Birthing Suite
  • Length of stay ranges from a few days to several weeks, depending on care needs
  • Residence rooms available for mothers discharged before their newborn is ready to go home
  • Care-by-parent rooms available 24–48 hours before discharge to help families prepare for caring for their baby at home
 

Service Provided:

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is equipped and staffed to provide specialized care for newborns who need closer monitoring or medical support.

Care and supports include:

  • Ventilatory support, oxygen therapy, medications, and phototherapy 
  • Ongoing assessment and individualized electronic monitoring of vital signs
  • Care for infants requiring “special care,” including babies born at Credit Valley Hospital or transferred from other facilities
  • Care provided in isolettes or cots, based on each infant’s needs
  • Specialized feeding support, including nasogastric feeding or intravenous nutrition, as part of an individualized feeding plan
  • Breastfeeding support from NICU nurses and registered lactation consultants, with referrals to on-site and community breastfeeding clinics after discharge 
  • Infant Hearing Screening provided on site in alignment with the Central West Infant Hearing Program

High-risk birth support:

  • NICU team attendance at high-risk deliveries and caesarean births
  • Immediate stabilization and care provided by a team that may include a paediatrician or neonatal nurse practitioner, respiratory therapist, and NICU nurse

Our care team includes:

  • Paediatricians and nurse practitioners
  • Registered nurses
  • Dietitians and pharmacists
  • Occupational and respiratory therapists
  • Social workers and psychologists

Family-centred care:

  • Parents are encouraged to be present and actively involved in their baby’s care
  • Healthy siblings are welcome to be involved when appropriate
  • Families are partners in care planning throughout their NICU stay

Specialized Neonatal Clinics

ROP Clinic (Retinopathy of Prematurity)
  • Outpatient eye exams for babies from Credit Valley Hospital and across the region
  • Clinics run bi-weekly, helping families in Peel Region access care closer to home
  • Inpatient eye exams provided on site by an ophthalmologist as needed
RSV Prophylaxis Clinic
  • Operates weekly during RSV season (typically November to May)
  • Provides monthly prophylactic treatment for referred infants who meet eligibility criteria
Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic
  • Multidisciplinary clinic operating twice weekly
  • Monitors physical, motor, and cognitive development up to 24 months (corrected age)
  • Serves eligible infants from the NICU and community physician practices
  • Referrals to community services and specialists made as needed to support ongoing care closer to home
