These tests are done to determine if your heart is receiving enough blood and oxygen during exercise. They are done while you are exercising because when you are at rest it is harder to detect heart and circulatory problems.During the test you will exercise by walking or running on a treadmill while your heartbeat and blood pressure are measured. Tests are performed by a staff member who specializes in this area of testing, and under the supervision of a heart doctor (Cardiologist).
Graded Exercise Stress Test
The purposes of this test are:
- To diagnose if you have coronary artery disease
- To determine if ischemia has gotten worse or gone away following treatment
- To detect heart and circulatory problems such as irregular heartbeat, partially blocked arteries or heart attack risk
Graded Exercise Metabolic Stress Test
The purposes of this test are:
- To help you set up a safe and effective exercise program
- To measure your respiratory response to exercise
- To assess Pulmonary or Cardiac Disease

What to Expect from Your Graded Exercise Stress Test
- You will be asked to sign a consent form before the start of the procedure.
- Your heart waveforms and blood pressure will be monitored while you walk or run on a treadmill.
- The test always starts slowly, however, you will be asked to exercise for as long as you are able.
- The test usually takes 30-45 minutes, including set up, exercise time and recovery.
*Please note for paediatric patients under the age of 18 years. A referral for the stress test must come from the Paediatric Cardiologist at Credit Valley Hospital.
What to Expect from Your Graded Exercise Metabolic Stress Test
- You will be asked to sign a consent form before the start of the procedure.
- Your heart waveforms and blood pressure will be monitored while you walk or run on a treadmill.
- You will be asked to breathe through a mouthpiece. This will also us to to determine how much oxygen you consume and carbon dioxide you produce.
- You will be encouraged to exercise to your limit and you will advise staff if you experience any symptoms during the exam.
- The total time for the test including set up, exercise time and recovery is usually 45 minutes.
Preparing for Your Stress Test
- Do not have any food, caffeine or cigarettes for 2 hours before your test.
- Bring comfortable exercise clothing and shoes.
- You must bring a complete list of medications.
