Illness and Reporting to Work
If you feel sick or have any of the following symptoms, please do not come to work:
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pink eye
- Runny nose or nasal congestion
- Loss in sense of smell and/or taste
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea or abdominal pain
- Unusual headache
- Fatigue
If you are feeling unwell, please report your symptoms through the Reporting Illness Tool on the Staff Portal Communicable diseases MUST be reported to People Health as per the Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols for Ontario Hospitals in compliance with Regulation 965, Section 4, Public Hospitals Act.
These Include:
- Adenovirus Conjunctivitis
- Herpes Simplex oral/orofacial infection or herpetic whitlow
- Influenza · Meningitis · Mumps
- Pertussis/Whooping Cough
- Rubella · Scabies
- Varicella - Chicken Pox/Shingles
- Vomiting and/or Diarrhea either
What happens when I get sick at work?
- If required seek first aid/ medical attention through People Health during business hours
- Speak with your Manager/Supervisor or On-call Supervisor after hours to determine if you need to leave
- If you are leaving work due to any of the above illness, please report to your leader and report your symptoms through the Reporting Illness Tool on the Staff Portal
Non-Work Related Injury/Illness
- Inform your unit and Manager/Supervisor prior to your scheduled shift as per department policy and maintain contact on a regular basis
- Your Manager/Supervisor may require that you provide a medical note for any absence to People Health at any time
When I am absent for 3 or more scheduled shifts:
- Notify your department and Manager/Supervisor
- Medical documentation is required to support your absence
When I am absent for 5 or more scheduled shifts:
- Notify your department and Manager/Supervisor
- Notify People Health , they will provide forms to be completed by your physician in order to obtain the medical documentation necessary to support your continued absence, this is due in 5 business days
It is your responsibility to seek and receive proper medical treatment during your absence. Ongoing medical documentation supporting the absence will be required.
Returning to Work
- Before you return to work you must complete the Clearance to Return to Work form through the online Staff Portal and you may return to work.
- If you have been off for 5 shifts or more, you must present medical documentation to People Safety for clearance to return to work
- A "Return to Work Authorization" form will be sent electronically to your Manager/Supervisor
Work Related Illness/Injury
All Work Related incidents must be reported to your Manager/Supervisor and People Health immediately. If the People Health Clinic is closed, you can also report your injury through the Staff Portal
- Seek proper first aid /medical attention in a timely manner
- Complete an Incident Report
- Inform your Manager, Supervisor and WSIB Consultant of any changes in your condition
- The hospital provides injured workers with safe and suitable modified work
Planned Surgery
Contact/Visit People Health prior to planned surgery to review process
Modified Work/Work Accommodation
All modified work and work accommodations must be coordinated and approved by People Safety and Support
- Supporting documentation will be required to assist in determining any accommodation request
- Disability related accommodation to facilitate your return to work will be coordinated by People Safety
Personal Issues
- Please contact your Manager/Supervisor/Human Resources
- Employee Assistance Program is available, contact People Health, your Manager/Supervisor or Human Resources
